Luthan Hotel & Spa: A Lady’s Haven

Women these days can do anything and everything. We can do two to three things at a time and still manage a household or a career (and our weight)! While our generation enjoys more freedom and power than those who came before us, we are also more exhausted than they were. We are more prone to be physically, emotionally and mentally drained with everything that we have on our plates. Every once in a while, we ought to take off our superpower costume and let someone else rescue us off of our feet. We need to experience relaxation and put some zen back into our busy lives. And ladies, I think we have just found the ultimate place for ladies to do just that here in Riyadh. Let’s all step into the realm of the Luthan Hotel and Spa.

This women-only boutique hotel and spa is a girl power effort from its inception, design and operations. It is located at the other end of Orouba Road tucked behind the main street and enjoys a very tranquil view of Riyadh that is still untouched by countless construction sites.

We were invited for a tour of the hotel last month and as we stepped into the main lobby alone, we could already feel a shift of aura from the outside world to theirs. Every room and hall was set to dim lighting, with glistening ceramic walls and decors echoing the serenity of the place. We sat in one of the plush sofas as we waited to be shown around the hotel. Ms. Lorraine, the Hotel Manager greeted us and had two of her senior staff guide us and show us the various amenities of the hotel. One of them, Ms. Ara Acebedo was actually a Pink Tarha reader and she made us feel quite at ease all throughout our tour.

First, we headed to the lower ground floor where most, if not all of their spa amenities were situated. Prior to entering the spa premises, you will be welcomed by a reception area that also features the exclusive and imported products that the spa uses for their treatments.

As we passed the reception area, we finally arrived in the main hall of the Spa area where there was a serenity fountain up front and a seating are on the left side for those who need quiet time to work with their computers or simply sit and have a sip of infused drinks.

Moving further down to the basement area, Ms. Ara showed us the various rooms of their diverse spa, which was a combination of traditional and modern therapies ranging from Moroccan, Chinese, Thai, South African, Indonesian and Indian roots. What is immediately noticeable is the impressive interior design that each room has! For starters, one of their rooms housed an authentic Indian massage table that was imported all the way from India for their Ayurveda therapies (a form of traditional Hindu alternative medicine). We were told that the entire thing was hand crafted out of one single tree — and it is traditionally and specifically done that way because it is considered a part of the healing process.

This Ayurveda type of therapy is called Shirodhara and is performed by a certified and native practitioner from India. The small round area in the photo is where the person’s head is laid while the device hanging on top allows liquid to be gently poured over the forehead. While Shirodhara was originally used to treat medical conditions like sinusitis and vertigo, in recent years it has become a popular form of relaxation therapy.

Interesting isn’t it? But wait, there’s more:

Herbal Sauna
Aromatherapy Sauna

I’m a fan of regular saunas but this one is far different from the other saunas I’ve ever been before. The one featured here is a quaint one and can only house four people at a time but what makes this sauna stand out is that on top of the heated stones are dried citrus, cinnamon and other herbs and spices that brings about this aroma all throughout the sauna that is simply indulgent and relaxing at the same time. It triggered my olfactory senses in a delicate and sensitive manner that I would love to try this out for real!

Aqua Meditation Room
It feels like a Mermaid’s room.

Now look at how beautiful this room is! This is the Aqua Meditation Room and it’s only meant for mere meditation. It is actually kept dim and dark once you are inside. If you want to contemplate and truly be with yourself all alone, this room is absolutely for that purpose. The benches have a heating mechanism where you can just lie back (so no need to worry about laying your back against cold ceramics) and there is an accompaniment of soft music that can help you center yourself.

Perhaps you have heard of the Moroccan baths? This is where they do theirs. It’s quite simplistic but it involves processes like exfoliating your entire body and application of body oils.

This Asian-flavored room is dedicated to their Shiatsu and Swedish massages. It has to be done on the floor as Shiatsu and and Swedish massages entail a lot of necessary maneuvers from the masseuse and this makes it easier.

The Royal Bride Room

This special room is reserved for Brides-to-be where in any or all of their desired services can be delivered to them hand and foot. This amazing tub caught our attention and was the centerpiece of this room. There is also a massage bed on the other side and other items for facial and skin care. In this room, you are sure to feel how royalty must feel like!

Moving on to their more modern rooms, these area comprises of their wellness treatments like lipo smart and state-of-the-art facial care. Before undertaking any of the treatments, an in-house physician is on-call for consultations prior to any of the following procedures.

This machine intrigued me really, simply because it looked like a small spaceship or something. It is called the InfraFitX and it is supposed to reduce body fat by using infrared technology while performing a low-intensity physical activity. Wowowee, eh? Very intriguing.

The center of their spa area is their lovely indoor swimming pool that’s fairly mid-deep only. It’s not the most optimal pool for doing laps but the pool is still utilized for some aqua exercises that they offer. Otherwise, you can just dip in and chill. It also has a built-in jacuzzi on the side for those who’d like to keep it warm and bubbly.

One of the more remarkable places that I saw in the Spa area was the Aqua Healing Pool. Again, I was intrigued when they told us that they do Aqua Shiatsu Massage here! This particular pool is heavily salted and heated and that you are to float during the entire process. Ms. Ara said that those who take up this treatment actually fall asleep during the process because it is just so relaxing. Ok, I’m adding this to my bucket list pronto!

Before leaving the Spa Area, we were also shown the Fitness Area. They have well-equipped gym rooms and a dedicated spinning room for their guests as well. We just couldn’t take photos at that time because there was an ongoing class.

Run, run, run.
Run, run, run.

As we finished the tour of the lower ground floors, we went back a bit to the main lobby of the hotel which had the Salon Area immediately on its right. We took a quick look and found a very chic salon space with fancy chandeliers.

They have a multitude of salon services that are a bit pricey as I looked at it, but since it’s part of the hotel services — I guess that warrants their price range. As expected, all of their equipment were top of the line. I was even amazed that those astronaut-looking devices for hot oil treatments are no longer used (here at least). They now have these heated, rotating orbits that hover around your head as you let your treatment sit. Pretty cool. 🙂

The 2nd Floor
The 2nd Floor

After the salon, we had a very quick glance at the 2nd Floor which comprises all the hotel rooms. Luthan has 25 rooms in total, including 6 special rooms and suites. They were fully booked at that time so we did not have a chance to open one of the rooms to personally view it. It looks like a lot of women were currently enjoying their ‘staycations’! Again, the interior design of this area was so impressive with rooms even tempered to meet one’s aura, if I am not mistaken. Now that’s what you call attention to detail.

Moving on up to last and final floor, we found ourselves in their Restaurant and Banquet area. On the right, there was a spacious room where small gatherings for special occasions could be held:

If you turn to your left, you will then find their main Restaurant and Dining section that also extends up to an al fresco setting. The view was pleasing as you could enjoy a wide view of Riyadh’s cityscape from there. The place was quiet and wasn’t too crowded and we reckon it would be a cozy place to dine with friends. J and I took a seat and decided we would like to try out their food. Naturally they had a very healthy and organic menu, coupled with some very healthy fresh juices. We had a full on course meal but wasn’t able to take photos of all the food. We were very hungry after the tour! Haha. Here’s just some of the courses we had:

Avocado Salad with Lime Juice

Beef Carpaccio with Arugula

Green Tea in an authentic Japanese tea pot.
Peppermint Tea in an authentic Japanese tea pot.

The food was generally okay. We liked their healthy smoothies (I tried the one with basil), soups and the dessert. For the main course Janelle had grilled lamb with polenta while I had wild sea bass with mashed potato. We later learned after meeting the new chef that this menu was based from the past chef who had just left so they are looking to enhance the menu items with her own creations. And guess who the new chef of Luthan is? None other than Chef Arwa of Dolce Ragusa, who I’ve met just weeks earlier during their grand opening. What a treat!

After our dinner, we waited on the lobby again for our driver to arrive. We had a splendid time touring the hotel and knowing that such a hotel like this exists exclusively for the ladies is such a breath of fresh air. Most of their clientele are visiting businesswomen/diplomats who want to feel comfortable being in a foreign land such as Saudi Arabia and can move around freely in their hotel, accessing amenities without having to put their abayas on and such. They also have regular local Saudi ladies who simply want to get away from it all and have a serene and relaxing time on their own.

The spa and salon treatments are available to non-hotel guests as long as prior appointments are made. Hotel guests have some spa treatments and amenities available for their use, depending on their package. We think this place would make a very nice weekend ‘staycation’ either with yourself or with your girlfriends to get pampered, put your feet up, and feel like a lady!

    • Hi there Don, thanks for reading The Pink Tarha.

The hotel rates are mentioned in the official Luthan Hotel and Spa website. An overnight stay ranges from 600-700SR. I suggest you contact the hotel directly since they might have ongoing promotions we don’t know of at this time, especially because it is Ramadan. Best of luck! And you’re a great hubby and dad to surprise the ladies of your life this way. <3 Cheers! -R
